Leadership | Matthew – Tax Collector

by danscott77 on September 20, 2010

“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.” Matthew 9:9

Reading this verse the other night, the thought came to me, “Matthew got it.”

As he writes about himself in the third person, he share with the world his occupation: tax collector. Basically, he might as well have just said, “Hey I’m Matthew. You might also know me as the guy who likes to steal your money.”

He truly understood all that Jesus came to do. Why don’t we?

We introduce ourselves as the author of this, the leader of that. Maybe we might say “Mr. So and So that God is using in a cool way” in hopes to deflect some of the credit. But really, we all know what’s going on here.

We don’t just say, “I’m Dan.”

Rather, we build ourselves up with our titles and accomplishments, when all that really matters is Jesus and living more like him.

Hi, I’m Dan…. Servant, foot washer, guy who doesn’t deserve one ounce of his credibility save for One man who lived the perfect life, died the perfect death, and now is alive again.

That’s what matters. I want to live like that today.
